Dried herbs and spices are such a powerful addition to a well-stocked pantry.  They have a natural place in many recipes that we make every day, but their usefulness extends far beyond that.  They are extremely affordable, but can turn a ho-hum meal into something fantastic.  Some spices round out foods with important underlying depth (like with garlic powder and onion powder, to name a few we often reach for), or can provide a bright, fresh top-note to a dish (think dried parsley).
Dried herbs and spices can also be used to throw together seasoning mixes that cost a ridiculous amount at the grocery store.  With literally just a minute or two of work and a fraction of the money spent, you can mix up this homemade fajita seasoning mix, or Homemade Ranch Dressing Mix.  And if you worry about mystery additives in your food, you can relax knowing that there’s nothing unpronounceable in the mix you just made.
This keeps pretty much indefinitely in a cool, dry place.  And since you didn’t spend more than $1 for a tiny serving of it at the store,  you might be more willing to experiment with it it unusual places – I’m thinking sprinkled on popcorn, or scrambled eggs.  Yum.
I don’t know about you but I’ve got better places to spend my grocery dollars than on something I can mix up in under two minutes and always have on hand!
