Is there a sandwich more universally loved than the classic BLT? I doubt it. It’s got all the elements that you could want in a sandwich. It’s good for breakfast, lunch or supper. Good on a gorgeous summer day and in the dead of winter. I wish I invented it.
Instead, I’ll have to settle for inventing this BLT pizza. I really love a pop of parsley or other fresh herbs in my BLTs, so the creamy white sauce on this pizza is infused with fresh garlic and fresh (frozen) parsley. It’s got cheese (of course… my favourite food), and a little onion to contrast the richness of the bacon, cheese and sauce. The tomatoes are sweet and summery and the crunchy, crushy lettuce is perfect to top it all off. If you’ve never tried greens on pizza now’s your chance (hint – you only add them after the pizza is cooked).
I keep this pizza nice and affordable by using our homemade dough recipe, only 1/4 package of bacon that is easy to stock up on when it’s on sale and stash in the freezer, cheese and cream cheese that were bought on super sale (see our Stock Your Fridge post for tips) and some seasonal produce that’s cheap right now.
One last hint: if you make our dough, it will make two 12-inch pizzas. Double the recipe below and make them both. You won’t regret it. (And any leftovers you happen to have will freeze beautifully without the lettuce.)
Homemade BLT Pizza (with white sauce) – Step-by-Step Instructions
Homemade BLT Pizza (with white sauce) – Ingredients
Preheat your oven to 450 degrees F.
This recipe assumes you are starting with dough already made, so you can either make our Simple Homemade Pizza Dough recipe (which makes enough for 2 pizzas, so you may want to double the rest of this recipe), make your personal favourite dough or pick up a ready-made dough if that’s more convenient.
In a medium-sized pan or pot, combine 1 minced clove of garlic, 1/4 cup of cream cheese (2oz), 6 tablespoons of milk, 1/8 teaspoon of salt and 1/8 teaspoon of pepper. Whisk occasionally over medium-low heat until the cream cheese starts to soften and break down, then whisk together until creamy and free of lumps. It will take about five minutes.
Meanwhile, mince 1/4 cup of fresh or frozen-fresh parsley. I keep fresh parsley in my freezer for when I don’t have access to fresh, so that’s what I used.
Cook 1/4 package of bacon during this time as well (or when you’re making the dough, if that applies). I really like cooking it in the microwave because it’s hands-off and fast. I use a plate similar to this one, except it’s ceramic.
If you’re making homemade dough make sure you grease your pan before adding the dough to it.
Stir the minced parsley into the white sauce, let it cool for a minute or two if you’d like, and then spread over your prepared dough.
Slice tomatoes and use a sharp knife to remove the seeds and pulp. This is easier if you use a paste tomato like a roma or plum tomato, but it’s still fine if you have a different variety.
Shred about 3/4 cup of cheese and slice an onion into thin slices (optional but tasty!).
Assemble pizza: on top of the sauce, sprinkle cheese. Cover cheese with tomato, then with slices of onion and crumbled (cooked) bacon.
Bake in preheated 450 degree F oven for 12-14 minutes (check the bottom of the crust to make sure it’s browned and cooked through) for one pizza, or 16-17 minutes for two pizzas, rotating them from top to bottom rack halfway through.
Top with shredded iceberg lettuce and enjoy! 🙂
