Guys, I have a super simple recipe for you today.  In fact, it’s more than just a recipe – it’s a jumping-off point for experimentation.

I know so many people who are either trying to drink more water, or are trying to get off pop (or soda, depending on where you live 🙂 ), or who are trying to cut down the amount of money they spend on drinks.

The Grapefruit Mint Infused Water I’m sharing today helps with all those problems, and it’s refreshing and delicious!

If you’ve ever tasted those bottles of flavored water you can buy, you probably know that they’re tasty.  But it’s easy to make healthy flavored water at home, and it can save you a ton of money compared to buying bottles of it at the store.

This recipe is for grapefruit and mint infused water, just because I find the mint really refreshing and the grapefruit invigorating.  If grapefruit isn’t your favorite, you could definitely use lemon or orange and get the same refreshing quality.

Don’t be scared to experiment either – lots of fruits, vegetables and herbs are delicious infused in water – strawberries, cucumbers, oranges, pineapples.  The sky is the limit, really.  I would just make small-ish batches that you’ll drink in a day or so, so that the fruit doesn’t go yucky in your water, and keep the rest (if you make a jug) in the fridge.

If you really love carbonated drinks (but not how expensive it is to buy them all the time), add a splash of carbonated water to  your glass of infused water to liven it up.

Tip: if you can’t quite get on board with an unsweetened drink, you can always add a drop (literally) of liquid stevia to your infused water, to give it a mild sweetness, without adding sugar or other questionable ingredients.

Ingredients for Grapefruit Mint Infused Water

Grapefruit Juice in Plastic Bowl and Half of Grapefruit on White Marble Board.

Use a juicer or reamer to juice the grapefruit.

Pull some mint leaves off their stalks and use your fingers to bruise them (so they’ll release their oils and flavour).  Add them to your glass.

Adding Grapefruit Juice to Glass with Ice Cubes and Mint Leaves in It.

Add some ice (if you want) and 2 tablespoons of grapefruit juice.

Glass with Ice Cubes and Mint Leaves.

Add 1 cup of water (I like to use filtered water from our Brita (this is the Brita we have and I love it), so there’s no taste of chlorine or other chemicals).

Tip: If you want to, you can add a splash of carbonated water or a drop or two of liquid stevia.

You can also make a larger jug of this if you want to.   It tastes mintier and tastier the longer it sits.

Tip: If you’re going to leave it in the fridge over time, don’t add any grapefruit wedges to the water (as pretty as it would look) because they’ll make the water bitter over time.

Enjoy! 🙂

Common Questions & Answers:

Is infused water really good for you?

Well, yes, it’s super good for you.  But the biggest reason is because it helps you drink more water, and more water is VERY good for you.  Most of us are terribly dehydrated, and drinking more water helps us flush our systems and keeps everything nicely hydrated.

At the very least, if you’re drinking a lot of pop (soda), homemade flavoured water /infused water is going to be way healthier than that is, so you’re definitely doing yourself a favour if you give it a try!

Is infused water the same as spa water or detox water?

Yes, they are all pretty much the same.  Maybe you’ve been to a health spa and seen gorgeous displays of spa water, or heard about the health benefits of detox water.  Like I said above, the biggest benefit of all is that these waters help people drink more water, especially if you don’t like the taste of plain water.  Naturally flavoured water is the best because it’s not filled with strange additives or artificial flavours.

How long does fruit infused water last?

Infused water, (or spa water/detox water) will last about 3 days in the fridge, if you’ve strained out the herbs and fruit.  I would leave herbs and fruit for one day, and fruit with a rind (like citrus) should either be squeezed directly into the water and discarded, or infused for a maximum of four hours.  After a few hours the pith (white part) will start to make the water bitter if you leave it in.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp pink grapefruit juice
  • fresh mint
  • carbonated water (optional)
  • liquid stevia (optional)
  • filtered water (I use water from my Brita*)

Instructions

  • Use a juicer or a reamer to juice the grapefruit.
  • Pick several leaves off the stalks of mint and rinse them in cool water.  Use your fingers to bruise them gently and put them in a glass with ice.
  • Add 2 tablespoons of grapefruit juice and 1 cup of filtered water and stir well to combine.
  • If you want to you can add a splash of carbonated water and/or a drop or two of liquid stevia (for sweetness).
  • You can also make larger quantities of this infused water and keep it in the fridge.**
  • Enjoy! 🙂

Notes

*This is the Brita we have.  I love how it's such a cheap way to have filtered water all the time!
**If you plan to refrigerate this or keep it for more than a few hours, make sure you don't put grapefruit wedges in it (as pretty as they look) because the rind will make your water bitter over time.
