Hey guys! We’ve been away on a family vacation but I had to pop in to tell you about this Sweet and Smoky Dry Rub Mix we’ve been testing out. I threw it together in less than five minutes the day before we left and we’ve had it on grilled chicken and pork chops. It’s got a dark sweetness from the brown sugar and it’s smoky from the smoked paprika (and ingredient I really recommend trying, if you haven’t yet!).
This dry rub mix is made with pantry staples that you probably already have on hand (and if you don’t have the smoked paprika, I promise to bring you many more ways to use it if you pick some up! – for now you can try our Smoky Bacon Potato Soup or Healthy Southwest Potato Salad).
Give this dry rub mix a try next time you grill chicken, pork, or even veggies like sweet potatoes. It really is one of the easiest ways to take your barbecue uptown without much effort at all!
Sweet and Smoky Dry Rub Mix – Step-by-Step Instructions
Sweet and Smoky Dry Rub Mix – Ingredients
In a small bowl, combine 1/2 cup of packed brown sugar, 2 tablespoons of garlic powder, 1 tablespoon of onion powder, 1 tablespoon of smoked paprika, 1 tablespoon of regular paprika, 1.5 teaspoons of salt, 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper (or more or less to taste), 1/2 teaspoon of cumin, 1/4 teaspoon of pepper and a pinch of cinnamon.
Whisk well to combine and try to get rid of any lumps. To use, pour some of the rub on a large plate and use your hands to rub it onto whatever raw meat (or vegetables) you’re planning to grill (you can also use this in the oven!).
Rub it in well and try to get into any crevices and on all sides. Let meat sit at least 10 minutes at room temperature or longer in the fridge before cooking. Some people recommend wrapping it in plastic wrap and refrigerating it for an hour for best results.
DO NOT put your hands back in the original bowl of rub if you plan to save it for next time – you will contaminate the rub with the raw meat on your hands.
Just have someone else add more to the plate if needed. Clean hands and cutting board well.
Barbecue or cook using your usual methods and enjoy! 🙂
Store any extra dry rub mix (that you haven’t touched with raw meat or dirty hands) in an airtight container in a dark cupboard.

* I highly recommend picking up some smoked paprika if you don't have any. It adds a lovely smoky taste whenever you use it. If you can't find it locally, Amazon carries it and you can check it out here.
